Campbell Wins Pool Tournament

Bob Campbell has been chalking up wins lately. The Highlands resident recently won the campus annual pool tournament and followed that up by stroking a win in the first putting tournament of the season on the green behind Highlands.

In the best two of three games pool tournament, Campbell beat Charlie Lotts, the winner two years ago. “I was lucky enough to hit the eight ball in the pocket before Charlie did,” Campbell said of the winning shot. “That’s about as close as you can get.” Eight players participated in this year’s tournament held in the recently refurbished pool room across from the elevators on the fourth floor of Highlands. Other players in the tournament were Pete Fundinger, Bill Ingham, Lloyd Bishop, Frank Lambert, Ben Crocker and John Noffsinger.

Campbell said he never played pool much over the years except occasionally in college, when he was in the navy, or some 30 years ago at a friend’s house. A Sunnyside resident for four years, Campbell said he got involved in the game three years ago when a neighbor invited him to participate in the tournament and he won. Last year he lost in the first round, however.

Confessing he didn’t practice much before this year’s tournament, Campbell said, “I was lucky this year.” He says the appeal of pool, like golf, is the challenge it provides, because you can always do better in the next game.

The pool table is available on the fourth floor of Highlands for any resident to use. Regularly scheduled games are from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays. Players from Sunnyside can join those from Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community (VMRC) and Bridgewater Retirement Community for 8-ball singles tournaments several times each year at VMRC.
