Volunteer Opportunities

Want to get involved but you aren’t sure what to do or where to begin?
Here is a list with brief descriptions of just some of the volunteer opportunities that are available on Sunnyside’s campus.

Assisted Living

Activities Assistant      -Assist with inviting residents to various activities, help with set up and clean up if applicable, and help facilitate interactions throughout the activity. Timeframe: days vary, usually 1-2 hours.

Bridge Player      -Be the 4th bridge player for a bridge game. Timeframe: Volunteers are scheduled on a rotating basis. Bridge games are played on Tuesdays at 2pm. Substitute positions are available as well.

Manicurist      -Socialize with residents while pampering them with a manicure. Timeframe: 1-2 hours, schedules are arranged by Assisted Living staff.

Trip Escort      Help residents get on/off the bus, assist with storing and securing walkers, ensure seatbelts are fastened, and assist staff/driver as needed throughout the duration of the trip. Timeframe: days vary but often on Friday afternoons and are usually 2-3 hours long.

Dinner Musician      -Play the piano or other instrument during dinnertime. Timeframe: schedules are arranged with Assisted Living staff, 4:30-6pm.

Pianist for various events      - Play for scheduled events/activities as scheduled with Assisted Living staff. Timeframe: days vary, usually 1 hour.

Mail Delivery      -Sort and deliver mail throughout all of Assisted Living. Timeframe: Monday-Saturday. Volunteers are scheduled on a rotating basis, 9am-10am.

Health Care

Dining Assistant      -Complete the dining assistance course and help residents at meal times. Timeframe: Any day, 7:45am-8:45am, 11:30am-12:30pm, or 4:30pm-5:30pm.

Mail Delivery      -Pick up mail from staff and deliver it throughout Health Care. Timeframe: Monday-Friday, 8:45am-9:45am.

Activities Assistant      -Help staff with room set-up, pushing residents in wheelchairs to and from the activity, help facilitate interactions throughout the activity, and assist with any clean up. Timeframe: Usually Monday-Saturday, 9:30am-11:15am and Monday-Saturday, 1:30pm-3pm.

Devotions      -Read and share insights from your favorite devotional in a small group setting. A pianist will be available to play hymns throughout the activity. Timeframe: Volunteers are scheduled on a rotating basis, Fridays 10am-10:30am.

Devotions Pianist       -Play 4-5 hymns throughout the devotion activity listed above. Volunteers will work with the devotions leader to select hymns to play. Timeframe: Volunteers are scheduled on a rotating basis, Fridays 10-10:30am.

Reading/Writing Assistant       -Read books or other reading material to residents. Assist with writing letters or cards with residents that have difficultly performing the task on their own. A list is provided that includes suggested residents to read to along with suggested reading material. This is an opportunity that does not require a set schedule.

Independent Living

Funside Folding       -A group of volunteers sort, fold, and label the monthly activity newsletter for distribution to residents and staff. Timeframe: 4th Friday of every month, 8:30am-10am.

Shuttle Driver       -Drive the on-campus shuttle to specified locations (Bethesda Theatre, Meredith Chapel, etc.). Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary details prior to scheduled time including: beginning and ending time of event, list of residents scheduled for the shuttle and their address, bus information, and any other necessary information. Timeframe: Scheduled in advance, days and times vary.

Special Events and Trips Bus Driver       -Drive to off-campus events/trips. Volunteer will be provided the necessary information prior to date of event/trip. This information includes departure and return times, list of residents in attendance, bus information, and any other information pertinent to the event/trip. A volunteer escort will be provided to assist driver in any necessary aspect. Timeframe: Scheduled in advance, days and times vary.

Special Events and Trips Escort       -Volunteer will assist residents and bus driver as needed throughout the duration of the event/trip. Volunteer will be provided with all necessary information prior to the date of the event/trip. This information includes trip itinerary, list of residents in attendance, directions, and any other information pertinent to the event/trip. Timeframe: Scheduled in advance, days and times vary.

Special Events Assistant      -Help with set-up/clean-up for planned events/activities. Volunteers may act as a greeter/host and be available for questions or assistance as needed. All information pertaining to this volunteer assignment will be given to volunteer prior to date of event/activity. Timeframe: Scheduled in advance, days and times vary.

Highlands Convenience Store Aide

-Volunteers will assist patrons in locating items and answering questions. The volunteer will also help answer the phone, restock shelves, make deliveries, and assist the clerk as needed. Volunteers may be asked to perform duties as a cashier independently if needed. Timeframe: Store Hours are 9am-1:30pm Monday-Saturday. Volunteers work with the supervisor to schedule two hour shifts, either 9am-11am or 111am-1pm.

Sunny Treasures Clerk

-Serve alongside another volunteer to run the Sunny Treasures store. Volunteer clerks help greet customers and answer any questions they have. Volunteers also assist with purchases and run the cash register. Timeframe: Store Hours are Tues, Wed, Fri 11am-4pm. Volunteers agree to a rotating schedule with 2.5 hour shifts. Substitute positions are also available.

Location and Supervision Varies

Adopt-a-Grandparent Program      -The mission of this program is to provide meaningful and supportive, one-on-one relationships with Sunnyside residents that will improve emotional and spiritual wellness for both residents and volunteers and also to provide practical support for our residents. These one-on-one visits are a half hour to an hour long and open the opportunity for making a deeper connection with a Sunnyside resident. All interactions are logged and available for staff to review at any time. Volunteers fill out a get-to-know-you questionnaire which will be used to match the volunteer with the resident that would be the best fit.

Pet Visitor      -Visit residents who have expressed interest in receiving brief pet visits. Pet must be approved and vaccination records on file. Timeframe: volunteer will work with staff to create a reoccurring schedule. Usually 1-2 hours.

Miscellaneous Assignments

Beauty Shop Escort      -Help residents get to and from their beauty shop appointments. Volunteer will work closely with beauty shop staff and nursing staff. This role involves pushing wheelchairs. Timeframe: varies on busiest times for the beauty shop. Shop hours: Mon, Tues, Wed, and Fri 8:30am-3:30pm and Thurs 8:30am-12pm. Volunteers are usually scheduled in 2 hour shifts.

Shipping and Receiving Assistant      -Assist with labeling incoming products, sorting and delivering packages and items as needed. Timeframe: schedule is arranged with staff; must take place Mon-Fri, 8am-4:30pm.

Golf Cart Valet      -Drive Sunnyside’s golf cart around campus and offer rides to residents, staff, or visitors. Timeframe: Opportunities to drive the golf cart are any day between 8am and 7pm. This opportunity allows volunteers to sign up for a little as one hour or as long as four hours with no set schedule required.
