Scams Continue

NEVER ACCEPT HELP FROM SOMEONE UNFAMILIAR.  THEY HAVE THEIR INTERESTS AT HEART, NOT YOURS.  NEVER LET SOMEONE YOU DON'T KNOW HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR COMPUTER, EITHER IN PERSON OR REMOTELY - NO MATTER HOW BENEVOLENT THEY SEEM TO BE.  IF YOU DIDN'T ASK FOR THEIR HELP, WHY WOULD THEY?

Unfortunately, some of us still fall victim to scammers.  The promise of easy money tends to be the hook.  You must realize that no one will give you money or a reward if you didn't apply for it.  The latest scam tells you that you're entitled to a refund from something you paid for months ago.

I'm prone to forgetfulness.  You may be, too.  So, when they called me to refund a subscription fee I paid months ago, I sure had forgotten about it.  Well, really, I never paid such a fee.  But, the nice person who made me aware of it asked me to log on to my computer so he could help me claim the refund.

Here's where the red flag went up.  He wanted me to give him remote access to my computer.  NO WAY!!!  Had I agreed to do that, he would have guided me to install a remote access app/program to allow him to do whatever he wanted in my computer - ever after without my being aware of his activity.  He may have even locked my computer and demanded a ransom.  It's a lot of work to recover data from a locked computer, if possible at all.

Stay alert.  Evaluate those calls out of the blue.  Remember Microsoft, Social Security, Medicare, the lotteries, courts, banks, etc. and any other entity you've had no prior relationship with will not use the telephone or email to award you money or serve you papers.  Official business is done by mail.
