Clean-Up Time Again!

Andy and Frances Sale organized the spring clean-up of Massanetta Springs Road on April 10 as part of the Virginia Department of Transportation Adopt-a-Highway program. VDOT provides the supplies and safety information, and volunteers collect trash twice a year. Ten Sunnyside residents - Andy and Frances Sale, Ruth Williams, Cindy Westley, Bill Dent, Bill Daigle, George Gibbs, Linda Gibbs, Galen Moses, Dick Kleckner - and Executive Director Charlotte Sibold met at the Sunnyside entrance at 10:00 for VDOT safety instructions and “Bag It, Move It or Leave It” instructions. VDOT safety vests, gloves, pickup golf club handles and pickup sticks were distributed. Then the group formed two teams and worked their way up and down the road between Shen Lake Drive and Rt. 33 collecting five full bags of trash, two dead animals and countless cigarette butts. Each year, more than 23,000 Adopt-a-Highway volunteers collect more than 44,000 bags of waste along Virginia’s highways.

At the end, Andy Sale collected the equipment for storage, cloroxed all of the gloves, and sent a report to VDOT regarding completion of our first annual litter pickup for 2021 to VDOT. Won't you join us in the fall? Just talk to Andy!
